Crate Training Your Dog The Easy Way
Learn how to tap into your dog’s elementary den instincts, and make her more obedient—naturally.
Like their ancestors, dogs are born, nurse, and later eat solid foods in a good enclosed area (called a den in the wild), and therefore tend to accept being confined to a crate when necessary. Teaching your dog that her crate is a safe site, and helping her make happy associations with it, can help you and your home survive behavior problems such as housebreaking and adolescent chewing.
Having said that, a crate should only be used along with proper training, exercise, and socialization. With a few basic guidelines, you can use it as a valuable tool in a variety of situations.
Crate Expectations
Whatever the age of your dog, it’s important to introduce her to the crate gradually. Here’s how to make a good start.
* Put the crate in an area of your home where you or others will be around. You may want to keep the crate in the kitchen during the day and your bedroom at night. To make your dog’s first experiences with the crate as pleasant as imaginable, put a soft blanket or towel (preferable one that smell like you) on the floor of the crate. Then throw a toy and some foods treats inside.
* Do not use force to make your dog go into the crate. Instead, let her hunt and find the goodies. When she enters the cage, praise her, and let her come and go as she pleases. Play this game for several minutes. If your Boston Terrier takes to this game, close the door for a few seconds after she goes in. Increase the amount of time that the door is closed, but stay close to the crate while you offer praise and treats as this is one way of crate training Boston Terriers effectively.
* Now that you’ve familiarized her with the crate construct, gradually get her used to being in the cage for longer period of time. Start feeding your dog her meals in the crate with the door closed. Leave the room while your dog is eating and then when she is just resting. When your dog shows no opposition, leave the house: First, go out for only 5 minutes, gradually increase your time away to 30 minutes. If your dog can stay in the crate for half an hour without getting agitated, she should be comfortable for hours.
* Don’t overdo it. Try to use the crate for short times, both when you’re home and when you’re out. You shouldn’t confine your dog for more than 4 hours at a time and for no longer than a total of 10 hours in any given day. Always give your Boston Terriers a special treat when you crate her. And remember, crated dogs need exercise and playtime too.

Why you always fail at crate training your dog
Crate Training Dogs is a pretty simple task. The steps involved with crate training are actually not designed to be difficult. Nonetheless, a bunch of people fail at crate training their dogs simply because these people don’t realize what they should be doing and how they ought to be doing it. Many people don’t actually realize the strategy required to effectively train your puppy to enjoy their crate. This article is made to help these people to solve their crate training problems.
These are the 3 major reasons people fail to effectively crate train puppies:
An important part of crate training is to never feed or provide drinking water to your puppy while they are in the crate. Dogs have very short digestive systems and will usually “go” withing 5 to 30 minutes after eating and drinking. Feeding them in their crate promotes accidents in the house and takes the place of the rest room area that you have designated for your puppy. You can give your dog small treats to show them that they have done the right thing when they go into their crate, but stay away from full blown meals and water in the crate. If you are concerned that your dog my be hungry or thirsty then you need to just give them a time to do so when you can take them out immediatly after they finish.
Buying a crate that is to large for your puppy. This is the most common and easily fixed problem that I know of. Most people will buy a big crate either because of the breed growth potential or trying to provide space for the do to “move around”. This usually only gives your puppy space to move bowels. This is usually the straw that breaks the camels back so to speak in terms of crate training problems. To make the area in the crate smaller you can put up dividers that leave just enough room to stand up, lay down, and turn around.
Using the crate as punishment. Your dog will not like the crate if you use it to punish him or her. You want to have your puppy wanting to be in the crate and feeling comfortable inside with the door open or closed. You will not achieve this if you punish your dog by crate time out. An alternative to this would be to punish them by simply scolding them and turning your back on them. If they try to play with you or be friendly this is an attempt to get rid of the problem by making you happy again. You should leave the room if your dog attempts to do this to show your puppy that you are serious. Soon, your dog will realize that what ever they have done wrong is what made you dissatisfied with them and made you leave and they will stop wanting you to be displeased with them so they will not do whatever they were doing that they were not supposed to do. That will solve the behavior problem and keep your puppy in love with the crate.
Crate Training puppies with these simple tips in mind will usually help you in having success with your crate training sessions.

2010 Apr 19Most definitely. You will be training your dog to have his own private place and as such he will not soil where he sleeps. Maybe a few times early on, but after that he will quickly learn. There is no better way to train, as now you have a place to safely put your dog when you leave the house and don’t have to fear coming back to a ripped up house. Even the most well behaved and trained dog can get scared or lonely or bored and rip up the house if he doesn’t have supervision. This training will stick for life and you’ll be glad to have done it this way.
Training by any other method does not make as much sense.

2010 Apr 19no. dont ever use the crate for something like that. if your thinking as a form of punishment for going in the house your wrong. a dog needs to be used to a crate for vet visits, grooming apointments and in case it ever needs to be crated for a move or something. if you teach your dog that its a bad thing to be in a crate your dog is never going to be comfortable in the crate and will end up hurting itself.

2010 Apr 19No, it just teaches your dog to go into the crate; and its just cruel. If you have a puppy, first thing you need to remember is that for up to 3 to 6 months they’re bladders are very small and should probably be taken out every hour. Take your dog or puppy to a certain spot outside and use the same word or phrase with them every time; “Go Potty”, “Potty” ect. Then once they are done, take them right back inside, don’t play with them or let them walk around. If you want to just take your dog out to play then go to a different spot on the lawn so he/she wont get confused Doing this will let them know exactly what they are out there to do and nothing else and will help them to remember. If you have to leave your dog for an extended amount of time try getting something called Puppy Pads. It’s a disposable pad you leave in your house for you dog to use the bathroom on. I’ve never used them but a friend of mine has and was very pleased with them. Also if you come home and your dog did go in the house don’t yell at it. After 5 minutes your dog isn’t going to remember what he/she did wrong and it will be useless. If you catch your dog going in the house then tell him/her no and point to the puddle and then take them outside to the same spot you take them to use the bathroom and try to get them to go again. Always praise them when they are done with their business outside and remember to take them inside right after. Hope this was helpful and good luck.

2010 Apr 19How old is your dog, as with children, the younger they are the more time, and patience you will need to train them, you will need a neck leash that when you pull on it tightens at the neck, make sure that this is cloce to tha jaw and not around the neck, you understand, you will need to have alot of time with the animal. Walk the dog give a comand such as heel, do not allow the animal to be in control, you must teach him you are master, tough gently but firmly, giving the command, consistently. give praise when the animal obeys, carry treats when he sits or stays etc, praise and treat, but remain in complete control through the prosess, don’t just stop there, control the pet until the training, is complete, caging them only make them nervious, and some animals go stir crazy, cage phobia! Go to the animal planet channel web site for more training tips. If you don’t have the time, to train this pet your self I am sure your local animal control center will have low cost trainers, how would you feel if you were caged? We must remember all living things desire to be free, and need affection is vital, lots of it. Thanks for listening! Anastasia

2010 Apr 19Yes! the first thing to remember about house training a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. a rule of thumb is they can hold “it” usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. when your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. after exercise (play), take the pup out. when the pup does it’s thing outside praise it. a lot. tell the pup how good, how smart it is. you have to pay attention to the pups “looking for it’s spot” behavior. when you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. if you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it “NO!” and whisk it outside. if you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit…. yourself in the head and say “i should have been paying more attention” daytime training they get pretty fast. night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. also remember the one hour/one month rule. you will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. good luck…

Crate Training a Dog – Help
Crate training is generally done with young dogs and puppies, but there are times when you may need to crate train an adult dog. Crate training your dog will help you to teach him the rules of the house; what he can and cannot chew on, where he can and cannot go to the bathroom, etc. Depending on your dog, this can take days, weeks, or even months. Remember, the crate should always be a happy place, and always take training slowly.
The first thing you must do is to choose the type of crate you want to use. Crates are plastic, metal mesh, or collapsible. Whatever type of crate you choose, make sure it just large enough for your dog to stand up and turn around in.
Next, place the crate in a location where the family spends most of its time. Kitchens, main hallways, and living rooms are all great options. By having the crate close to you, your dog can go into his crate without feeling secluded or alone. Make sure you have a nice soft blanket and the door is tied so it will not move or frighten the dog.
Now it is time to show your dog the crate. Place bits of kibble or chicken outside the crate, just inside the door of the crate, and in the back of the crate. It is alright if your dog will not go all the way in the crate. Once your dog is fully comfortable with walking completely in the crate, you can feed him his meals in the crate. This helps the dog to associate the crate with positive things!
Once your dog is comfortable consuming his meal completely in his crate, close the door while he is eating. The very first time you do this; open the door immediately after he finishes eating. The next time, leave the door closed a little longer, and so on. If your dog whines or cries, it is imperative you do not open the door until he stops. By letting him out as soon as he begins to cry, he will associate crying with getting out of the crate.
