Is it possible to train your puppy to go pee outside after you’ve already begun training him to go inside?

I have a Bichon Frise and they are notoriously difficult to potty train. He’s almost finished with his puppy shots and since he continues to go in the house, EVERYWHERE HE CAN, even though I’m “crate training” him, I want to try taking him outside everytime instead of to his “spot” indoors because it just seems not to be working. After his shots are complete, I’d like to begin trying to take him outside. Do you have any ideas on what I can do to help him learn where the correct “spot” is??? I give him plenty of praise when he goes inside where he’s supposed to but then about 30 minutes later, he’s peeing somewhere else in the house again. My husband thinks I should give him a good slap with a newspaper everytime he has an accident, but I find that rather cruel. Plus, he’s only going to be 16 weeks old, he’s just a baby (smile).. . . . . . SOMEONE HELP – PLEASE!!!!

Is it possible to train your puppy to go pee outside after you’ve already begun training him to go inside?

Why Should You Use Puppy Crate Training? | Puppy Crate Train

If you’re a new pet owner you are probably searching for a great puppy housebreaking method to house train your new puppy.  Puppy crate training is one of the most effective methods employed today.  It’s recommended by many dog trainers and dog behaviorists for several reasons.  Keep reading to learn if puppy crate training is right for you!

What Is Puppy Crate Training?

Simply put, you set up a crate to act as your pets den.  I’m sure you’ve heard somewhere that canines are den-dwelling animals.  Puppy crate training takes advantage of this natural instinct perfectly!

In this crate you’ll have the following:

  • A comfortable bed
  • A bowl of water (that doesn’t spill or tip over easily)
  • Your pets favorite toys for entertainment
  • (Optional) An extra blanket for added comfort
  • (Optional) A crate cover to darken the interior and make it seem more like a den

At night time your puppy will sleep in this crate with the door closed.  Some whining will occur at the beginning but this can be fixed easily.  (Remember:  Do NOT go to your puppy when they whine.  This teaches them to whine for attention and is a VERY bad habit!)

During the day time you can leave the crate open and let them come and go as they please.  The crate should never be used for punishment.  They should feel safe and comfortable in their den and locking them up all the time during the day could make them upset or afraid.

Why Is It So Effective?

Many people don’t think of dogs as den-dwellers.  The truth is a dog’s desire for a den is embedded in their canine genes.  Think of canines in the wild!  Wolves seek out a den to claim as their own.  Domesticated dogs are the exact same way.

This is the main reason as to why puppy crate training is so effective!  In providing your canine companion with a crate you are catering to your pet’s natural desires. You are doing them a BIG FAVOR by creating this den-like environment for them.

Plus, the dog’s training will benefit greatly when you with with your dog’s natural instincts and not against them.  Why use other methods that don’t go along with your dogs instincts?  Or better yet, why use other methods that go AGAINST your dogs instincts?

Puppy crate training is the perfect solution to please both you and your pet.  As far as housebreaking goes you don’t have to look any further!

Puppy Crate Training – Effective Housebreaking For Puppies

The most important factor in puppy and dog training is to provide positive reinforcements such as rewards and praises each and every time your pet does something correctly. For instance, it is ideal to praise puppy biting on toys instead of the sofa, or if they poop outside instead of inside the house. More time spent with your dog or puppy means easier and quicker puppy training for you.

Establishing a routine increases the chance that your puppy goes in the right place in your presence. Then following this up by rewarding and praising them is very important in the process of house training puppies. This reduces the chance of having your puppy do his thing in the wrong place and also prevents bad habits from developing.

It is also important that you prepare conditions for your puppy when you are not around. While your puppy is not yet trained, he or she should not be allowed to run freely around the house. This may develop the habitual leaving of puddles and piles anywhere and everywhere. Set her up in a small area such as the kitchen, utility room, or bathroom that has water resistant or stain resistant floors. However, this does not constitute puppy crate training.

Crate Training for Puppies

One of most effective and efficient ways to house train a dog is puppy crate training. Generally, puppies and dogs do not like soiling and messing their sleeping and resting places if they’re given the opportunity to go somewhere else. Confining puppies in small places impedes this need to go, but puppy crate training is of far greater importance.

While in the crate, your puppy will learn to hold back and poop or urinate only when she is released. You have to understand the difference between the temporary confinement in a crate against long-term confinement when you are not home. Confinement when you are not home restricts accidents to only a small area, while crate confinement helps train your puppy to hold back from going to the bathroom during the period he or she is confined. When your puppy is released and taken to an appropriate area, only then will they will go.

Puppy crate training helps puppies develop bowel and bladder control. So instead of doing it anytime they feel like it, puppies learn to hold back and let go at proper times. During crate training, it will be helpful if you keep a diary of the times your dog goes. If you have a regular feeding schedule, your puppy will soon adopt a corresponding potty time. And as soon as you get familiar with the times they usually need to go, you can start taking them only during those times instead of every waking hour. After they go, puppies can have a free yet supervised run of your house.

Mistakes and Accidents

Punishments are not encouraged in case of accidents while doing puppy crate training. Just clean the mess up and don’t make an issue out of it. You might have given her access to your house too soon. You have to keep your puppy supervised when running around the house until she can be trusted enough to learn to hold back. Go back to your puppy crate training, and if you can afford it, maybe you can get her some puppy training lessons.

Housebreaking My Puppy in an Apartment

Housebreaking my puppy in this manner is not necessarily my preferred way of training him (I’d really rather not have my animal go to the bathroom in the house!), but it is the most humane for him. To use this method effectively, I set up a crate area that serves as his “room” – it’s where he sleeps, hangs out, and plays poker with the friends he invites over when I am gone (you may have a picture of he and his buddies somewhere on your walls) – and I also set up another area that serves as his toilet. In this second area, I place papers and pre-treated pads, and I cover the area with his scent by sprinkling his own urine over the papers to let him know that it is okay to use that area for his business.

Now, housebreaking my puppy by using the functional equivalent of a litter box may seem somewhat repugnant to any cat-haters out there, but the alternative would be to have one series of accidents after another. Believe me, I have tried housebreaking my puppy friends in the past by simply taking them out of the door and down the stairs on a leash – or carrying them – and all it ever got me were stern looks from my neighbors, and hallway clean-up jobs that I could have avoided. I never had a puppy that could make it all the way down the stairs without an accident. And don’t even get me started on the one time I thought I would use the elevator…

So believe me when I say that I am more than happy to stick to housebreaking my puppy in the only apartment-friendly way that I have found. It requires the same amount of constant observation as crate training in a first-floor home – my puppy and I just don’t have to walk outside when it is cold. Sure, the papers and pads need to be changed and the bathroom area needs to be regularly cleaned, but it’s a small price to pay for my best friend. And while it may seem less hygienic than crate training or some other methods that people use to housebreak their dogs, it’s really no less hygienic than living with a cat. And at least my dog comes when I call him.

Toilet Training Your Puppy – 3 Ways to Housebreaking Your New …

First of all, know that your puppy is going to drive you crazy at times, but it’s a fun crazy if you’re patient. Your pup does not speak English and does not know sign language. There are two main rules you need to set down first BEFORE we go over the tips on how to make toilet training run smoothly.

Rule #1: If you don’t catch him, don’t punish him – This is probably the most important rule. If your puppy pees on the floor but you don’t see it, you can NOT punish him for it. He will have no idea why you’re angry!

Rule #2: Praising – Make sure you praise your puppy. This means praising him when he does potty outside and not just saying “no” all the time when he has an accident in the house. He needs to know it’s a good thing to go potty in the “right” place.

Three Ways to Smooth Toilet Training

Paper Training - You can do this by using papers or pretreated pads. (the pads are scented with a chemical that actually attracts your pup to use them) The first pattern of any puppy is when they start walking around and sniffing the floor. This is the first sign of “I have to go potty”. Very gently pick him up and put him on the paper (or puppy pads) and when he goes potty, make sure you praise him, praise him, praise him! When he is used to going on the papers, start moving them closer to the door and eventually put them outside. He will get used to finally going outdoors and you can remove the papers permanently.

This is not hard, but paper training may take a little longer since you are first training them to potty indoors. The most important thing for you is to be patient. Don’t YELL him! You don’t want him to be scared of you.

Crate Training - If you have a crate, this is a very popular way to toilet train your puppy. When dogs are placed in their crate which is only big enough for their bed, they do not want to soil where they sleep. Even puppies will control their bladder longer in these situations. But please don’t ever leave your puppy in a crate for hours on end.

When the time comes where you cannot watch your puppy for a little while, place him in the crate. Examples of this are when you are cooking, maybe reading a book to your kids or even while running to the store for groceries. Before doing your chores, take your puppy outside so he can do his business. Praise him and then bring him in and put him in the crate. Don’t put any food or water in the crate if you will only be gone about one or two hours. Just put a blanket and maybe a nice chew toy so he can entertain himself while you’re gone.

When you are finished with your chores, let him out of his crate and set him outside to potty. You will be amazed at how fast you can train your puppy with this method. Also, this will teach your puppy that when he has the urge to potty, he CAN hold it for a while. Puppies will relieve themselves when they feel like it, so crate training will teach them control which is what you want when housebreaking.

This is the main reason that crate training creates a puppy that has fewer mistakes later on. Just make sure you get a crate that “fits” the size of your pup. You need to buy crates that your puppy can grow into.

Constant Supervision: This methods involves no pads, papers or crates. You just choose to spend all your time with Fido. This is great if you work from home. This also means you need a constant eye on your pup. As soon as he starts sniffing around, take him outside. There will not be room for error, so as soon as he is finished going potty, praise him and then bring him right back in the house. This shows him the purpose for going outside, which is to go potty. Always use a word, “potty” or “outside” (use what works for you) so your pup understands what is going on.

Put your pup on a feeding schedule to help with the housebreaking. Puppies will need to go out within 30-40 minutes after they eat and as soon as they wake up from a nap. If you feed them at the same time every day, you will be a much happier dog owner. Be consistent and be patient. Remember, puppies turn into your best friend.

Give Your Puppy a Great Start with Puppy Training

The first few months of your dog’s life are an important time for training. While they are not ready for formal obedience and behaviour training, puppies can start learning habits that will help with their future development.

Sometimes you are just too smitten to think about training your new puppy. It’s still tumbling around and looking so darn cute. Working on housebreaking might be the only dog training you are concerned about.

However, the first 16 weeks of your puppy’s life are a critical learning period. During those first months, your puppy will develop about 90% of their attitudes about the outside world – people, other animals and their environment.

Puppies are not ready for formal training during the first 4 months, but those months are so important to their development that it’s beneficial to use that time to develop healthy habits – for both your puppy and you.

A puppy school is a good way to start teaching your puppy without exposing them to the formal obedience training for which they are not ready. The right puppy school is a great way for puppies and owners to get off to a good start on a lifetime of learning and mutual respect.

Look for and stick to learning the basics of puppy training:

      • Housebreaking
      • Chewing/biting
      • Jumping
      • Puppy first aid
      • Walking on a loose leash
      • Crate training
      • Nutrition
      • Puppy and child safety
      • Puppy learning games

You and your puppy will enjoy the advantages of puppy school for a lifetime. By starting to learn in those all-important early days, your dog will have a solid basis in learning that will make all future obedience and behaviour training much easier and more productive.

It’s important to make sure that puppy school is fun for your dog. If you feel too much is trying to be done, then you are probably right. Trust your instincts and choose a school you think has the right approach to puppy training.

Alpha Paws’ Puppy Pre-school specializes in a fun and natural approach to teaching your puppy how to learn. The Alpha Paws’ instructor will perform an assessment and develop a puppy-training program specifically for your puppy’s needs.

      Guide To Housebreaking Your Puppy

Housebreaking is the most indispensable thing your puppy must learn. Common sense should tell you why. Do you want your house to stay spic and span? Handle your puppy’s housebreaking well. Aside from the maintenance of your household hygiene, trained dogs are happy dogs. As creatures of habit, it’s in their nature to keep schedules as pack animals. Here is how you should housebreak your puppy:
How Old Should My Puppy Be To Start Housebreaking
It is best to start housebreaking your puppy when he/she reaches 8 to 12 weeks of age.
      Crate Training
Dog trainers suggest using a crate in housebreaking your puppy. A crate is like a cage, with see-through bars and a locking door. Its size should accommodate well the dogs size for it to move around in. It should be used like a dog’s bedroom. It is advised to not confine your puppy in his crate for more than two hours at a time.
The reasoning behind using a crate in housebreaking your puppy is that dogs will not dirty their sleeping areas. However, he may do so if you lock him in somewhere for longer than he can hold it in. Never use a crate to punish your dog, it will backfire. Generally, pups that are three-months old must eliminate every 3 hours, so you should lead him to a special outdoor comfort place more often.
      Make Your Puppy Learn Routines
When it is time to take your dog out doors to eliminate be sure to use one door only. This way he will use that door to let you know he needs to go outside.
Taking the puppy out at the same time everyday will help your dog to get into a routine. This will help him to learn to hold it in until you are available.
Your Puppy Will Give You Clues
In order to accomplish this goal, you must pay attention to the signs that your dog is giving you when he needs to go out. He may scratch on the door, starting at the door, circling in an area or he may be constantly sniffing. That is your clue to let him out.
      Patience is a Big Virtue
Patience and consistency is the key to housebreaking your dog.
Common Sense Makes a Lot of Sense
Common Sense will help you and your dog while housebreaking. Stick to a routine, do not give him water before bed, to not ignore the clues.
In order to succeed in housebreaking your puppy patience and consistency is of vital importance. If for some reason you are not able to stick to the routine and your puppy has an accident don’t blame him just get back into that routine as soon as possible. It will take a lot of time and commitment on your part but don’t give up.
      Best of luck!
