What is your opinion on my specific puppy crate training technique?

shes a 3-4 month olg applehead chihuahua. My only issue with her is her potty training (oh and by the way she is an indoor chihuahua and I cannot keep her outside agree with it or not its my choice).. I feed her at 6 am, 12-1 pm, and again at 6 pm before bed. Ok that being said I wanna put her in her crate until she eliminates on her mat then let her out in hopes shell get used to the paper texture (the crate is big and divided and was chosen by her trainer).. will she, as she grows older, get accustomed to the paper texture of her mat and then as she grows be able to emliminate on the mat without having to be placed in her crate.

I agree with you about how not to keep your dog outside. I hate those kind of people. however i disagree with your way. try trusting him more and have him go outside or at least go on that matt outside of her crate. Dogs like to go to the bathroom near place he can smell his waste so how about when he goes clean the mess up but make sure at least the dog can smell it on the matt. The dog will most likely go their again.

Crate training is for potty training method but your method is not a right method. its using the crate for wrong purposes.

HOPE I HELPED.

Crate training-ur doin it wrong.

The dog isn't supposed to eliminate in its crate, the crate is suppose to help prevent elimination. You are creating a mass amount of problems for yourself by doing this.

So your puppy never goes outside for a walk or anything? what a deprived pitiful life that is. would you like to be stuck inside 24/7 forever? Your dog needs to get out and see new things, smell new smells. its a dog, not an apartment decoration.

you don't train the dog to go to the bathroom in their PERSONAL space. would you like having your toilet in your bedroom? didn't think so.

she's old enough to be walked and trained to go OUTSIDE.

Yeah, forcing the dog to eliminate in her crate is really working against her natural instincts. It's really going to slow training down. Dogs like to keep their sleeping areas clean, thus why crate training works, they learn to hold it to keep their crates clean.

If you really want to inside train her, check out a podcast free on iTunes called "Creative Dog Training". Around their 30 episode (you don't have to download them all), is one dedicated to housetraining your dog to an indoor area. I personally haven't done this, but their method seems to make sense. just search for "Creative Dog Training" in iTunes and you will find an episode list. they are really experienced trainers and I have used many of their techniques from other episodes.

Their indoor training technique is very similar to effective outdoor training techniques, so I suggest your try it out (or at least listen to the free podcast for some general ideas).

Good Luck!

    Training Techniques for Puppies

when you make the decision to train your puppy on your own you will need to decide which training technique that you will use.  there are many various methods to select from with many dog training courses available.  Secrets to Dog Training is a well-known example. You can pick from paper potty training, crate training, rewards based training methods, clicker training and others. the following are two of the most popular methods used in training.

Clicker training is a rewards based training method . Rewards based training is when you reward your dog for a desired behavior . This is in contrast to negative reinforcement where you penalize a puppy for an undesired behavior .

Clicker training is a training method involving the use of a device known as a clicker. it is typically used in dog obedience training. here is an example . You give out a command . when he does what you wish you click and then follow with praise and a treat.

the clicking action lets the dog know that you are pleased with his action . as you continue to train, the dog will obey the command you give and perform the action that you wish expecting a reward in return. Over time the dog will become accustomed to following your command and you will be able to lessen the reward with a pat or praise without using the clicker .

Clicker training is an effective method of training your dog to perform any kind of behavior that you desire . what makes it effective is that you are able to click immediately after the desired response is given. This cues the  dog that it has done what you want and he will be ready for his reward.

Crate training is a popular method for housebreaking a puppy . Dogs are den animals so they naturally delight in being in a confined space. I know this is different from us humans natural tendency , since we do not like confined areas. However, puppies love it.

The key that makes crate training effective is that puppies like to have their space tidy . so instead of pottying in the crate they will hold it until you let him out of the crate .

To make this training useful you must make sure to place the dog in the crate and take him out on a consistent schedule. This way their body gets adjusted to the potty times. make sure you give him food and water on a regular schedule as well.

Eventually the puppy will be on a schedule to know when it will be able to potty. Be consistent in where you take the puppy outside to use the . This lets the puppy know what is an acceptable place to go.

Potty training your puppy using crate training can also be useful in another area . During the process the puppy will get used to being in the crate. This will be helpful since now you can place him in the crate if you have guests over or when you are traveling.

Clicker training and crate training are 2 efficient training procedures for training your dog. Clicker training is helpful to get a desired behavior and crate training can help you get your dog potty trained. use these techniques and you should have a well trained puppy .

Some Reasons Why Dog Crate Training My Dog A Good Plan …

Getting your k9 used to going into a cage will provide him with a protected and safe place. In addition, if you wish to travel with your pup or simply just take your pet to a vet you may have to place him in a dog crate and if he’s already used to the dog crate, this is often an additional bonus. In case your pet is needing house training, a crate can help in a very big way.

If you’re going on a vacation with your pup, regardless if you are driving or taking a plane, you’ll want to think about a dog crate. The fact is, if you want to fly on an airline with your pup she will need to be in a crate and won’t that be easier if he or she already thinks of his or her crate as a home? Getting your pup used to and even welcoming a cage will certainly make it a lot easier when you have to travel.

If you are not bringing your puppy with you on vacation, you might have to board her someplace, and whenever he is being boarded, he is destined to be in a crate or a cage. Obviously, he’ll probably be afraid of this new circumstances and scared because you aren’t there, but when he’s already accustomed to being in a crate and considers it a secure place this will likely significantly help towards relaxing his anxiety.

Crates can also help in the course of potty training. The idea is well-known that canines will not soil where they rest, therefore if you wish to prevent your dog from going in the house, using a dog crate is the best choice. However, it should be noted that you must look at your pet’s bodily needs above all and you need to realize that he can only hold it for so long especially if he’s a pup. It would be cruel to put your canine in the cage for ten hours while you are at the office when you learn he can only hold it for five hours. This would merely be asking for failure.

Furthermore, you ought to select a crate that’s small enough so that your canine can’t find a faraway corner to do his “business”. Crates should only be used for house training if you can keep an eye on your canine friend and let him out if you recognize he’s showing the signs that he must go.

Having a cage available for your canine satisfies his natural intuition. In the wild, canines like to reside in dens or sleep within safe areas. Your pet’s crate will be able to act like a den to provide your pet the security he wants right in your house.

Dog Potty Training Problems – Two Tips You Can Use Today | Easy …

Whoever says potty training a dog is easy is either lucky or they know what they are doing. The problem is your dog is very young at only three months old and she needs to toilet every few hours.  Even after three months you might not be successful in your efforts to train her.

Even though you have done all the right things, such as crate train your dog, put the dog outside after a nap, teach her toilet training outside, and maybe tried other things as well, but still it is not working.

What do you do next? It is at times such as this when you wish you could talk to her, and she could understand the behaviour you want from her, then the problem would be solved. But she cannot, so stick with it. Communication between the two of you is really the key here.

You need to know what the correct procedures are that ensure success, that is the link that is missing.

If the potty training still is not working for you, here are two things you can try.

1.Leave her outside after she has toileted to have a sniff around, rather than bring her straight inside. By doing this you are telling her being outside is for fun and not just for toileting.

2.Keep from playing with her until she has toileted. That way she will want to get it out of the way quicker so she can play with you.

Good luck with the potty training.

How does crate training a dog work?

I gave up on this method of potty training. Apparently your dog is supposed to learn to hold the pee/poo until morning, right? Well my Pomeranian pup didn’t. I always found poo in her crate, and it’s not a big crate, it’s the right size. Should I try again putting her in the crate again? She’s 7 months and still not potty trained. Any advice?!

Dog House Training Tips – Using the Crate in Dog Potty Training

Crate training in very beneficial when it comes to in house dog potty training, since it will help you in training your dog self control as well as spare you a fantastic deal of effort in cleaning up after your dog when he has had accidents in the house. The crate forces your dog, even young puppy, to keep it in for a period of time. But, do not keep him in the crate for too long and do not use the crate as punishment.

Dogs have a natural instinct not to mess in its shelter, but if there is plenty of space, it will relieve itself as long as there is enough space for it to sleep in. So in selecting a crate remember to get a crate that is perfect for your dogs size.

It is also a excellent thought to get a crate huge enough for your dog when he is his adult size. You can divide it to fit him as he grows. In this way you will not have to buy more than one crate for your dog as he gets larger.

When choosing a crate for your dog, you should take into account that it needs to be the right size for the dog, not only for all-function house training purposes, but mainly for potty training.

If the crate is too huge for your dog, he will not see the need to keep it in if he has to go.He will also not have a problem with relieving himself on the one end of the crate and sleep on the other end.

A very young puppy should not be left in the crate for more than 2 hours at a time depending on its skill to control its bladder. As your puppy gets older you will notice that he can keep it in for longer periods of time.

So it is really a matter of your puppy”s individual enhancement and abilities. There is really no rule in this regard. Older dogs can be left in the crate for longer, even overnight.

You should monitor your dog while he is still not 100% crate qualified yet as he might get nervous and hurt itself in an have a crack to escape from the crate.
