What exactly is “crate training” a dog?
First you must acquire a crate that is the right size for your dog. It needs to be just big enough so that your dog can lie down in it (and turn around etc.) It should be not too small, but not too big. This isn’t a room for your dog, just a place to sleep.
Then you familiarize your dog with the crate. It should be the dog’s “happy place”. you can do this by offering your pooch treats in the crate and placing a pillow, blanket, or toy inside. Whatever your dog likes best.
Once your dog has become comfortable in the crate, you can leave your pup in there while you are out of the house. Dogs are very clean animals that don’t like to urinate in their sleeping area. This means that your dog will be reluctant to potty in his crate. Perfect for you!
Don’t leave the dog too long! As soon as you return, take your pup outside and allow him to do his business.
Of course when you’re at home, you don’t need to keep your dog in his crate, but you may find that if you leave the door open, he may like being in there (seeing as how it is his comfort zone). Just keep this up and in no time your dog should learn that outside is where he should potty.

Dog Training â?? Dealing With House Training Issues
The best house training uses the dogs own instincts to avoid soiling its bed to train the dog where and where not to eliminate. That is the basis behind crate training, in which the dog is confined to its crate in the absence of the owner, and den training, in which the dog is confined to a small area of the home. In essence, the crate, or the room, becomes the dog’s den. Dogs are naturally very clean animals, and they try their best to avoid using their dens as toilets.
This type of training usually works very well, both for puppies and for older dogs. Problems with this type of toilet training are usually the result of not understanding the signals the dog is sending, not being consistent with feeding times, or trying to rush the process.
While the house training process can be sped up somewhat by consistently praising the dog and rewarding it for toileting in the proper place, some dogs cannot be rushed through this important process. It is always best to house train the dog properly the first time than to go back and retrain a problem dog.
If the dog continues to soil the den area after house training, the most likely reason is that the owner has left the dog in the den for too long. Another reason may be that the den area is too large. In this case, the best strategy is to make the den area smaller or to take the dog to the toilet area more frequently.
If the dog soils the bed that has been provided in the den area, it is most likely because the owner has left the dog there for too long, and the dog had an understandable accident. Or it could be that the dog has not yet adopted this area as the bed. In addition, urinary tract infections and other medical conditions can also cause dogs to soil their beds. It is important to have the dog thoroughly checked out by a veterinarian to rule out any medical problems.
One other reason for house training accidents that many people overlook is boredom. Dogs who are bored often drink large amounts of water and therefore must urinate more frequently than you might think. If you notice your dog consuming large amounts of water, be sure to take the dog to the established toilet area more often, and provide the dog with toys and other distractions to eliminate boredom.
Boredom is the root cause of many dog behavior problems, not only house training issues. Chewing and other destructive behaviors are also often caused by boredom and separation anxiety.
Other problems with house training can occur when the dog’s den is not properly introduced. In some cases dogs can react to the den as if it is a prison or a punishment. Those dogs may exhibit signs of anxiety, such as whining, chewing and excessive barking. It is important for the dog to feel secure in its den, and to think of it as a home and not a cage.
The best way to house train a puppy or dog, or to re-house train a problem dog, is to make yourself aware of the dog’s habits and needs. Creating a healthy, safe sleeping and play area for your dog, as well as a well defined toilet area, is important for any house training program.
House training is not always an easy process, but it is certainly an important one. The number one reason that dogs are surrendered to animal shelters is problems with inappropriate elimination, so a well structured house training program can literally be a lifesaver for your dog.

New kennel expands the work of service dog trainers
It is a big day for the group that trains service dogs in the region.
Representatives of the St. Francis of Assisi Service Dog Foundation cut the ribbon on its new kennel in Roanoke Friday morning.
The new facility will allow the group to greatly expand the number of dogs it trains to help the disabled every year.
Previously, volunteers and prisoners had to house the dogs offsite, because there wasn’t enough room for them at St. Francis.
The new kennel has room for 24 dogs and plans are already in the works to expand beyond that.
“It was always a dream, when it started at my kitchen table, that we would have a facility. I have to say this has gone beyond my expectations,” said Carol Willoughby.
Willoughby says there is no better time for someone in need of a service dog to apply. St. Francis is one of only 50 such groups in the world to achieve international accreditation.

House Training Dogs ? Working With the Adult Rescue Dog
House training dogs is easier when you get to start them as puppies, as they are younger it is easier for them to learn. You have decided to do the humane thing and rescue an adult dog from the pound, you have come home and have just now realized that your new pet is not house trained as you discover a little present in the kitchen…now what. Never fear, it is possible to house train adult dogs.
As with house training puppies; this will require diligence, commitment, patience and a good nature. As with puppies, no punishment, this will only cause more problems in the future. If you catch you dog eliminating in the house, rush the dog outside, once they have finished going outside praise them. If the dog makes a mistake while you weren’t paying attention, clean up the mess and move on, there is no point is punishing the animal because you weren’t paying attention.
Don’t kid yourself, this will be a lot of work, every time your dog goes outside, you go with them so you can praise them at the right moment, remember, dogs live in the now you must praise them at the moment, not later when you let them back inside. As laborious as this will be it allows your canine to get an understanding of what you want and allows you to get a feel for their schedule.
As you can see, house training dogs is easier the younger they are, don’t let this dissuade you from adopting an adult dog that may not be trained. Just as with puppies, once trained they will follow the rules unless they have no other option. Remember, adult dogs need homes, families and love to.

House Training Older Dogs – Get it Right the First Time – In No Time
Are you having problems with training an older dog? Do you need help with some helpful tips on training an older dog. If your training any dog you should work with the best method of training dogs which is the Praise and Reward method.
Training older dogs can be easy, and can also be difficult. It depends on what training the dog has previously. If you are trying to train your dog you have had for years then you should find this very easy to do. If you have just got an older dog and you don’t know what training it has, it might be a little more tricky.
What we are going to do is take you through some simple tips on how to train your older dog.
I have had a border Collie/Collie cross which was about 3 years old and was able to train her very well. She was homeless because the owners had moved interstate, and she had been badly mistreated. But we were able to train her well and she was a happy loved member of our family.
I think people under estimate how smart some dogs can be. Training older dogs can be frustrating, but if you keep training them you will eventually get them to do what you are training. You need to be persistent. As much as you seem to be going over the same thing all the time, you are getting closer to having a well trained dog.
When training your dog use really nice treats, something they might not normally get. They will see that as a special reward. Don’t try and teach them too many things at one time, just work on one thing at a time. And when they can perform this task regular then move on to the next piece of training.

dogs hate crate but they are destroying our house?
My husband and I have just moved into a brand new house. At our previous home we let the dogs have free roam of the house and they never messed anything up. For the first month the dogs were fine at the new house, but recently they have started to go crazy. It has progressively gotten worse. Today I came home to find that they had torn up our blinds and chewed off the framing by the door and almost tore up our carpet by scratching it. One of our dogs was a pound dog and absolutely hates being crated. I feel so bad, but I honestly do not know what else to do. I bought a pet yard but they were able to jump over it. So my question is can I put both my dogs in an XL crate and do I need to make sure they have food and water for the day? I am worried that they will just end up spilling it and then have to lie in water all day. They are going to have to be in the crate for about 8 1/2 hours. I hate the thought of this, but I don’t know what else to do.
