What's the difference between a kennel and a dog crate?
I learned from the dictionary that a crate is a wicker basket, then what is a dog crate? Isn't it the same as a dog house?
kennel comes in many sizes, made of wire, normally for much activity for the dog
crate is anything that is just a size bigger then your dog, plastic or wire – sleeping or house training
A dog crate is wire and is usually in shape of a square and very open and a kennel is usually plastic and rounded but not very open. A dog crate is meant to stay in place, while the kennel is usually used to transport a pet.
A DOG crate is a wire, or plastic crate or kennel.
Some people consider a "Kennel" to be the same thing as a crate (Dog)
A Kennel can also be a large, outdoor "run"
I think the term is used interchangeably, they are the same thing.
It really is quite confusing – in the US a kennel can be the plastic or wire "box" the dog stays in when inside the house, in the car etc. but it is also the kennel run that some people have outside that has wire mesh and is usually about 6 foot high. A dog house has nothing to do with a kennel or a crate, but the may be one inside the dog run.
In shelters and boarding kennels you also talk about kennels when describing the runs the dog are in, even if they are inside a building. And the boarding kennel is the whole place, consisting of several kennels/runs.
Even more confused?
Dog "crate" can be anything portable.
Dog "kennel" is not portable and is usually found outdoors or it could be somewhere you can board (leave your dog for someone to care for) while you are on vacation.
HAHA well, they are more or less interchangeable. to contradict what I just said, a dog kennel can be a place to take your dog to be looked after for a while. A crate is nothing more than a sturdy box to put a dog in. Could be metal, plastic, or any other material.
A dog crate is wire, plastic, wood etc.. Plastic crates are better. the term Kennel can also mean crate.. But it's generally a fenced run outside. Different areas, use different terms regularly.

Dog House Training – How to Crate Train Your Dog
Bringing a dog home is not just a matter of pride but also of responsibility. you need to groom your dog with a perfect dog house training so that it can blend well with your life style and your family.
dog house training involves a number of elements such as obedience training, potty training, crate training and several others.
puppy house training is easier than training an adult dog because a puppy is still learning. If you want to provide your puppy with comfort of his own home within your home, it is advisable to get him a crate.
However, you will need to put in some extra effort to make sure that your puppy gets proper crate training, so that he can realize that his crate is not a prison but a real home for him.
Crate training a puppy involves teaching your puppy the basic commands of getting into the crate and staying there till you call it back to play with you or run about the house.
Crate training is also important, when you are having a party in house or you are leaving house for a few hours and you do not want your puppy to run around creating a mess.
You can begin with guiding your puppy to its crate when you are ready to go out or when you are arranging tables for guests. after a while your puppy will learn that when these things happen, he is supposed to go to him crate.
You can then make use of commands of ‘go home’ while pointing towards and crate and follow it up by ‘stay’. you puppy might start getting into the crate on your command soon, but might not want to stay.
This is where you need a little patience and also need to repeat the ‘stay’ command to make sure that it stays where it is while you walk back to your living room or dining hall to continue with the preparation.
You should always keep in mind that if the crate is comfortable enough, you puppy will not mind staying there and playing with its toys till you are busy with other things or guests. If you puppy is constantly avoiding its crate, you might need to change the crate.

How do I get my dog to use his dog house?
We got my outdoor dog a new doghouse complete with the wood chips and now he won't get in it at all!! It's starting to get way too cold out but he can't come in the house. Any suggestions?
Uh, when he gets cold enough, he will use it. Seriously, dogs can withstand what we consider incredibly cold temps if they are being fed a suitable diet and are acclimatized to the weather. Wood chips have very little insulating value. Remove them and loosely fill his house with straw (NOT HAY). More than likely he will dive right in and make a bed in there.
Now what the hell is an "outdoor" dog. Give me a break here. Why did you get a dog to put him outside. Do you know there are laws that relegate how long a dog can be outside? and here you are thinking it's just fine and dandy.
That is just cruel. Dogs want to be with their pack/family and you put him outside?
UGH! ugh! UGH!
Bring the dog inside where it belongs for God's sake.
go camping with ur dog in ur back yard decorate his dog house like ur tent u go in ur tent he goes in his. do it 4 a couple of days keep the tent out there and when hes sleep senak off at night then wak up b4 he does and sneak i the tent do it till he forgets
worked 4 me and it will work 4 u (rate me plzz)
we had the same thing happen and we didnt relize that we got cedar chips and he hated them and neer went into the house so we went and got plain ones and then he loved it……
you might want to throw in some treats ..or put his food bowl in there to see if he will even go in there… it could be jsut a new thing that they are unsure of…
Put his favorite toy in the box so he goes in for it. or toss a really high value treat in, something like a piece of chicken breast, or something he really can not resist. That is how I always did it. good luck
Put his toys and his bed in there. Once he realises he's safe and warm in there he'll use it more and more
Housetraining Puppies and Tips on Housebreaking Your Dog
There seems to be an overload of information out on the web right now concerning dog house training and housebreaking techniques. If you do a brief Google search on the subject, you’ll be sure to run into thousands of articles and how-to-guides full of information. However, not all of it is actually true. Amid the helpful tips on how to train your pet, you’ll also find plenty of myths that remain unverified and yet continue to be passed on as sound advice. so in order to shed some light on the matter, here is a list of some of the most popular house training myths today and whether or not they hold up to the test.
Clean up your pet’s bathroom accidents with club soda!
This is one of the most popular myths that people will call upon when discussing ways of housebreaking your dog. Inevitably, there will be some accidents in the beginning, when your pet hasn’t yet learned to go potty outside on its own. However, club soda will only help to a certain point. it may get rid of a small stain or pile, but as far as getting rid of the accompanying odor, it won’t really do much good. To make sure that your pet’s bathroom accidents don’t leave a mark (visible or otherwise), use a high-powered enzymatic cleaner that is made especially for that purpose. It’s important to get rid of the odor, not just because it’s unpleasant to humans but because your dog will recall the odor next time it needs to go, and will return to the same spot again unless you get rid of the smell. on a side note, you’ll also want to avoid using ammonia as a stain cleaner. it gives off a scent that dogs interpret as urine, or in other words, an open invitation to use that spot as a toilet.
If your dog rolls on its back and urinates, the house training isn’t working
This is a common misconception. If your dog rolls onto its back and urinates, it does NOT mean that the housebreaking isn’t working. This kind of behavior is actually a sign that your dog is intimidated or is scared of you. It’s called “submissive urination” and it happens when your dog wants to show respect or deference. How do you fix this problem? Try to be a bit more accommodating and not so intimidating. Don’t scold your dog after it performs this submissive behavior. Leave it alone for a minute and then clean up the mess. Continue with your normal housebreaking routine, but make an effort to crouch down next time you pet your dog so that you are at eye level with it. Don’t look it in the eye, as this may signal that you are trying to enforce your dominance over it. And make sure to give it plenty of love and attention.
Adult-sized crates are best, even for pups
This one is, quite simply, false. the idea of buying an adult-sized crate for your puppy stems from the belief that it’s best to get the puppy used to a bigger crate so that you don’t have to wean it out of the smaller ones gradually (something that is not just time consuming, but also expensive). However, putting a small puppy in a big, adult-sized crate will only accomplish one thing: it will encourage the pup to use one end of the crate to sleep and the other end to eliminate. nonetheless, it is true that buying a new crate for each stage of your puppy’s development can get quite pricey. the best way to solve this crate training problem is to buy an adult sized crate with a divider that can be moved to adjust the size of the space available to your dog as it grows up.
Do NOT scold your puppy after an accident
This one, surprisingly enough, is true. for a long time people have held to the belief that scolding your puppy and rubbing its nose it its own waste was essential to teaching it not to make a mess where it’s not supposed to. when articles started coming out preaching the exact opposite, many people remained skeptical. But as any professional dog trainer will tell you, scolding your dog is an ineffective training method. often, it will only serve to frighten and intimidate them, as they probably won’t remember what it is they did to make you so angry. the best way to housebreak your puppy is by taking it out to the yard or designated bathroom area at regular (usually 2-hour) intervals and keeping a close eye on it during its house training period so that you prevent accidents before they happen. And more importantly, reward your dog with affection and treats when it performs the desired behaviors.

What would be a good floor material for a dog pen?
My dog gets muddy every time it rains. When I'm at work, he has to stay outside in his pen. theres no grass, only dirt where his pen sits. what would be a good option for the floor that would be comfortable and clean for him?
concrete floor- easy to clean- hard for dog to eat- just be sure to give him shelter in there- like a dog house or one of those dog igloos
concrete, easy to clean
hay is pretty good. If you put enough in there it will keep him above the mud. my neighbors have a lot of dogs and they always have bails of hay to use in their pens. Cement would be great if you can afford it. you can get hay from an area farm. you could also use woodchips but it might hurt the dogs paws.
well cament is hard, and im one of those people that is concern about my pens so what i did was layed cement down and then went to fleet farm and got a rubber cow mat and put that on the cement.. works great and dogs dont chew it either. easy to clean too.. just take dog out of pen spray with water hose and waa laa.

3 Secrets to Adult Dog Training – Tips to Train the Adult Dog
Bringing home an adult dog is very different from bringing home a puppy. a puppy is able to learn new commands fairly quickly but an adult dog is accustomed with the old tricks. He may also have developed some bad habits which his previous owner allowed. if you found your dog from a shelter, chances are he had learned different commands and undergone training. however, old dogs can also adapt and change their behaviors to your expectations. you will just have to be patient with your adult dog training.
Having the Best Dog Training Advice is important if you Want a well Trained Dog.
House Training your Adult DogIf you are bringing home an adult dog from a shelter, the first thing you have to ascertain is whether or not he is housetrained. if not, you will need to train him immediately. Having been shuffled around many foster homes, your dog will need some time adjusting to the new environment. be sure to show him his litter bathroom area where he should excrete. Compliment him as he does it right.
Crate TrainingCrate training is always one of the hardest aspects of dog training for an older dog. Most dos do not enjoy being in a crate and they think of a crate as a prison. you should always ensure that the crate is spacious and comfortable for your dog. you can place some toys in the crate and make it homely. you can even place some blankets inside the crate. As a start, you can consider leaving the door of the crate open and allow your dog to discover it on his own time. He will begin to explore it and in time come to think of it as a safe haven.
Alternatively, you can begin crate training on your own terms. always start off gradually. get him to enter the crate and keep him inside for a short period of time, and then let him out. On some days, keep the door latched. On other days, keep it opened so that your dog can leave it freely. this way, he will not associate it with a prison.
Teaching your Adult Dog new BehaviorsWhen carrying out adult dog training, focus more on teaching your dog new commands rather than correcting his behaviors and punishing him for it. Remember, it is not entirely his fault that he developed these bad habits. His previous owners may have encouraged him. Instead, you may want to ignore his advances. for example, if he comes up to you and begs for food when you are at the dining table, you should turn a blind eye to it. Only when he tries bolder moves such as jumping on you or the table, you would then have to reprimand him.
The best way to get your adult dog to kick this habit of his is to teach him new behaviors. Execute basic commands and get him to stay in another room as you are dining. Bring your dog to the spot you want him to be and instruct him to stay put. Repeat this training until he gets that you want him to remain in this spot as you eat. Adult dog training requires much patience and effort on your part. it won’t be easy but once you have successfully trained your dog, you may have a very meaningful relationship with him.

DIY Disasters – How Not to Build a Dog Kennel

Several years ago the crony who owned an outward dog enlisted my assistance to set up the dog house. We had tiny woodworking knowledge so motionless to keep it elementary though versatile, gripping the dog gentle in the feverishness as great as steam in summer as great as the cold as great as sleet in winter.
We totalled the dog as great as drew the really severe devise which would be vast sufficient which she could stand, spin around as great as distortion down, though tiny sufficient which she would be comfortable in the winter. How formidable could structure the dog cage be? We used untreated 2?x4? timber (the chemicals used in treated with colour timber have been poisonous to dogs), extraneous class plywood, rug nails, thatch nails, shingles, the hammer, cavalcade as great as saw.
Using the measurements you fundamentally assembled 5 framing rectangles from 2? x 4? two by 4 which shaped the bottom as great as walls of the kennel. Plywood was totalled as great as nailed to the base, with the pathway as great as multiform movement holes being cut in to the plywood for the front row prior to it was trustworthy to the frame. The 4 wall panels were afterwards lined up upon the bottom row as great as nailed to the bottom as great as any other.
At this indicate you detected the complaint with the dog house: the roof. Not usually did you not have any thought about how to put together the shallow lamp as great as rafters, though you had trustworthy plywood turn to the tip of the front as great as behind panels, forgetful about gable ends. An internet poke led us to multiform sets of instructions, though nothing worked with the to the little extent built dog kennel. After multiform frustrating hours you gave up as great as figured the prosaic roof, done in the same approach as the walls, with shingles for continue proofing would work well.
For the initial couple of weeks things were great, which is until the initial complicated rains. Having no angle, H2O could not run off the roof, progressively leaking in by the joints as great as feeble placed shingles. We attempted the couple of repairs though they were not really in effect as great as the dog, who primarily desired the kennel, stopped starting in during all.
Thinking behind you comprehend how confused you were. Having no knowledge you should have invested in great peculiarity dog cage skeleton which listed all the materials as great as apparatus which were indispensable as great as on condition which step by step instructions. My own dog is removing comparison as great as needs the dog ramp. you was starting to get the little timber as great as begin hammering, though recollections of structure the dog cage stopped me. you am you do my homework, will get plans, as great as have sure you am entirely rebuilt prior to you begin building.
