Crate training- 10 wk old bichon poodle?
Hi, we just brought home our 10 week old bichon/poodle. I would like to start crate training her but every book/article I read has slightly different directions. I am home all day, but our house is big and I cant keep an eye on her 24/7. While I train her, should she be kept in the crate (she likes it) for a 2-3 hour stretch and then taken outside to walk and go, and keep going like that (2 hours in, then outside) all day long? Please tell me what schedule worked for you

Cesar the Dog Whisperer and Crate Training?
First question is who is this Cesar person, what kind of dog whisperer is he supposed to be. My son who lives in America asked me if I had heard of him some weeks ago, and I hadnt, but I happened to catch one of his programmes on Sky last night, and was totally gobsmacked at some of his methods. In the main, all he is doing is using spike collars, which are banned in the UK………for very good reasons. And why is everyone so keen on Crate Training on here, why have a dog to shut it in a crate………it is so cruel………it doesnt house train them any quicker, if you want a dog you have to be prepared to be at home with it especially in the first few vital weeks, when potty training can easily be achieved……so why is there a need for a Crate? Presmably some American craze that is flavour of the moment?ok, I only saw one show, it was on last night the one with two boxers and an eskimo dog. The method he used with the eskimo dog was good, but….the eskimo dog, the boxers, and the mixed breed at the end……all had spiked collars, even though I did see Cesar put a rope collar on the eskimo dog, surely he would have advised the owners to remove the spike collar, or he he suggest they use them as it is strange all dogs had them on, but I have only seen one show so reserve judgement until have seen more.Crate training doesnt help potty training in all cases, and if you are too idle to take your puppy out to wee regularly, without resorting to a crate, then dont get a dog.To drb, I have a crate which I use only at shows to keep my dogs safe from other dogs………however, as I did try my puppy in it for one night, in our bedroom, and he wee’d in it, and he hadnt wee’d in the house at night before then, so it didnt work……!

Dog Carriers – Providing Safety and Security When You Travel
If you’re traveling whether it’s by car or by plane, you’ll want to make sure that your dog is as comfortable as he or she can be in order to provide him with the most pleasant travel experience possible and to prevent increased levels of stress. Dog carriers are one way that you can give your dog a little privacy and a sense of security when you’re traveling to your destination. This privacy and security might give your dog the level of comfort need to reduce levels of stress and make travel more enjoyable for them.
There are a number of different types of dog carriers that you can purchase to make your dog’s travel experience more pleasant and less stressful. One of the more popular types of carriers is the soft sided dog carrier. The main reason this carrier is so popular is because of the soft interior environment that they provide for your dog. Often times they have extendable sides which will provide more room for your dog during the trip. The soft sided carriers also come with rollers, handles, and in many cases extendable handles, which make it easier to tote your dog around in airports, bus stops, or wherever it may be that you have to travel.
Another popular type of dog carrier is the dog stroller. This type of carrier is very popular for those who own smaller breeds such as the Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, or any other type of small dog breed. These small breeds typically cannot walk as far and at the same pace as humans so they often times become tired and have to be carried. The stroller is a great way to be able to include your dog in the long distance walking activity, without having to force them to walk the entire time.
Sometimes you require dog carriers that will hold dogs that are a little bigger in size, in which case you would want to consider purchasing plastic carriers, or even metal dog carriers if you need an increased level of sturdiness and security. These types of carriers are often stored in the back of trucks or SUVs and typically will not fit in cars because of their size and bulkiness. There are plastic versions made specifically for cars, but theses generally are made for smaller breeds and not your large breed dogs.
If you’re looking to purchase a dog carrier, take a look at the situation for which you need the carrier. If you have a small breed and plan to travel quite often, then the soft sided carrier may be your best bet. If you need to transport your large do on a regular basis, then a heavier duty plastic version may be appropriate. Whatever the case may be, you’ll be able to provide your dog with more comfort and security when you travel with dog carriers.

Selective dog breeding aims to progressively improve upon the features of a dog breed. It is the other side of the coin to some irresponsible breeders, who reportedly keep them in small cages for long periods without exercise, love, or human contact. No matter how experinced a dog owner is the excessively caged animal will always tend to develop undesirable behaviors and may bark excessively. He may even become destructive and unsociable.
Selective dog breeding has been practised over millenia since early human development, and it has provided the huge range of dog breeds that exist today.
It is thought that selective breeding was begun when humans came across an abandoned wolf cub and took it with them. As this wolf grew older it would become less fearful of humans and therefore be semi-tamed. Humans maintained a population of useful animals around their homes since pre-historic times . They intentionally fed useful dogs, while killing wild dogs, establishing the relationships between humans and specific types of dogs over thousands of years.
That created the pedigree dog breeds which are well known today. It is important that al breeders breed selectively and choose their male and famail dogs for breeding carefully.
Studying pedigrees and visiting kennels is the best way to select the most compatible stud, and this can consume weeks or even months of a breeders time. And because the onset of a bitch’s season can’t be predetermined exactly, a short-notice trip to the stud will probably be necessary, making proper choice of mates very difficult. Stud owners and owners of the bitch certify the mating to the stud-book or the club. Stud-book and club cannot determine if the named stud has mated the named bitch, also not if the bitch of a breeder (knowingly or not) has been bred by several studs (also out of other breeds) in one season. A lot depends on trust amonst breeders in the dog breeders world.
Mutations can prevent proper development and maturation. Even though particular traits might seem like they are novel, in such cases it is really a loss of information since the animal has stunted development in one trait. Mutations occur spontaneously all the time. Environmental pressure can drive what mutations are favored, but mutations are not caused only by the environment.
Generally selection also loses out because most people just take the first available stud or the cheapest to breed with their female. Not doing extensive research on the medical history of the other dog can cause medical problems that become genetic in that breed. Generally Wolf-Dog is very common figure of Caucasian peoples tradition and legends and is very old in this region (actually it comes from Hittites period). But legend is not to be mixed with reality – it is absolutely evident that Nagazis have not any relation with wolfs. Generally, the wider the variation in the parents, the wider the potential for variation in the litter.
Genes do not act singularily and in isolation. The effect of an allele in the phenotype is as much a property of its genetic enviroment (and for that matter the ’traditional’ enviroment) as the protein it codes for (look into additive gene effect).
Inbreeding brings out recessive genes in the homozygous condition. Genes that are “homozygous” are genes that have no opposing gene in a sense – in other words, the dog will carry this trait and no other version of the trait. Inbreeding can also lead to a bitch’s decreased fertility or her giving birth to smaller litters. Inbreeding is the breeding of close relatives not separated by more than one generation, i.e, brother to sister, father to daughter. This method is used to concentrate good qualities in the line but may also concentrate bad qualities.
Hip problems with different dog breeds should be identified at an early stage. If you think that smaller dogs are safe from joint problems, you’re wrong. Hip dysplasia is a potentially crippling malady that affects many breeds. Eye, heart and skin problems negatively impact many breeds.
Breeders consider a mixed breed a horrible thing. There’s huge pride in the dog’s lineage, its pedigree, as if breeders were talking about their own family trees, as if they’re descended from aristocracy. Breeders could not escape their responsibility without all the kind “rehomers and rescuers” who take that responsibility for them. The breeders of unclaimed dogs in pounds could be fined, making the breeder responsible, if all pups had to be micochipped. Breeders who sell cheap puppies. It takes a lot of funds and other resources in order to raise healthy puppies.

Dog DNA Test – How Does the Dog Breed DNA Test Work?
You might be wondering, how does this DNA testing tool able to identify your dog’s breed? In the sampling process, cheek cells are obtained by cheek swabbing before sending it to the lab for breed analysis. Many people have mistakenly collected saliva from their dogs for further analysis. The swabbing process is completely painless and non-invasive. It is done easily by the dog owner without the presence of veterinarian.
If you choose Canine Heritage Breed XL Kit for your mixed breed dog DNA breed test, simply read the instructions, included with the Canine Heritage(TM) kit, and place the swab in the packaging tube, and finally reverse the tube liner so that the pre-paid mailing label can be seen through the tube and drop in a mail box for DNA breed analysis.
Therefore, cheek cells samples will be analyzed via the advanced SNP-based DNA Technology Process in which able to identify over 100 major breeds (as compared with US dog breed population). This process normally takes 4-6 weeks to complete and the results will be displayed in the form of a frame quality Certificate of DNA Breed Analysis along with your dog’s picture in which also included on the certificate at no extra charge.
Dog owners have to know that this particular test is not designed for use as a purebred or paternity verification test and is not an established legal tool. It was developed and validated using United States dog breed populations. Therefore breeds outside the United States and Canada may not be represented or identified by this particular breed identification tool.

It is important to train your dog
Dog training is an importance aspect of pet ownership that helps to nurture and develop a strong human-animal bond between the pet and their owner. Training is not a tool used to exert domination over a pet, but rather to teach your pet socially acceptable behaviors as well as to make your pet a safer and more pleasant companion.
Pets that have been introduced to the basic elements of training are much more docile and disciplined animals that can follow simple commands and are more likely to stay out of trouble. Consider their untrained counterparts, who having no exposure to training are much more difficult to control and can pose a serious threat not only to themselves but to their family members as well as others in the public.
A well-trained dog will not run out into the street, chase another animal, or be aggressive towards other animals or people. This is especially important for larger animals that can be capable of causing damage or injury.
Dog training is recommended for every household that owns a dog, regardless of the dog breed.
Dog training is not easy, but consistency and patience are necessary to ensure that your dog learns your commands quickly and more effectively. Most dog owners can institute a basic training program that consists of obedience training, leash training and potty training while their puppies are young. It is important to start basic training early in your pets’ life because it is much harder to train an adult dog.
Starting with basic obedience, your puppy should be able to recognize his/her own name and respond when called. Using a verbal command like “come” while calling their name will teach them the most basic form of obedience. Gradually you can advance to more complicated commands like “sit” and “stay.”
Training can and should be a fun experience for you and your pet. Giving pets a small reward (like a good scratch behind the ears or small treat) during the initial stages of training will reinforce their behavior and make them more eager to please their owner by correctly following instructions.
Leash training is an important aspect of training your pet. Leash training is essential to provide a safe walking experience for you and your dog. An animal that is properly trained to walk on a leash is much easier to control. Imagine taking our dog to the veterinarian for a routine visit. The untrained animal is more likely to attempt an escape while the well-trained animal will walk through the door, at their owner’s side with confidence and less fear. Leash training is also beneficial simply because walking is a healthy exercise for both the dog and their owner.
Potty training which can be extremely frustrating for some pet owners is one of the most important parts of training. There are several methods that can be used to train a puppy where to eliminate appropriately ? such as the crate method or puppy pads. The type of training used depends on the animal’s personality type as well as what the owner feels comfortable with.
If you need tips on potty training your puppy you can consult with your veterinarian, as well as use other resources such as training books and the Internet for ideas of training that may better suit your lifestyle. It is essential for pet owners to know that just like children pets need to be potty trained.
Whichever method of potty training you use with your pet it should never involve physical punishment. It creates an unhealthy relationship with the pet. Pets respond better to praise and wanting to please their owners so it’s best to use a reward system.
Some people may not think that dog training is important especially if their dogs live outside or if they are used for the purposes of being an alarm or guard dog. Regardless of where your dog lives or what they are used for, be it companionship or protection, it is important for them to know who is in charge and that they are able and willing to follow commands. It is important that they are well trained to know how to act appropriately in social situations. A well-trained dog is much easier to live with and communicate with.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Dog Breed Profile Information
Description: The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a medium sized dog with a height ranging from 17 to 20 inches at the withers and a weight of 30 to 45 pounds, depending on sex. The bitch is slightly smaller than the dog. This dog has a long, single coat will be found in various wheaten shades. The puppies are born with dark fur, and the change to the lighter coat does not occur until the dog is about 2 years old. The tail of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier can either be left natural or docked. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier will live to be 12 to 15 years of age. This dog is also known as the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, the Wheaten Terrier, and the Wheaten.
History: Descended from the Irish Terrier and the Kerry Blue Terrier, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was a working farm dog in Ireland. It is known to have been used there for over 200 years. Interestingly, the docked tail began as a tax exemption – if the tail was docked, the Wheaten was considered to be a working dog and not subject to the dog tax. This dog was a versatile dog on a farm, earning its living with killing vermin, watching herd animals, hunting, and guarding the home.
Temperament: The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a jolly dog with an optimistic outlook on life. While not as aggressive as other terrier breeds, this dog will bark at a stranger and protect its family. The Wheaten is very affectionate with its humans and loves to play with them. Children are fine with this dog and it enjoys their company. The Wheaten should be socialized with cats while young, but will always exhibit hunting instinct when around small animals.
Health Issues: Although this is generally a healthy dog, the Wheaten can suffer from gastrointestinal diseases and eye problems. The most serious threats to this dog are two protein wasting diseases, one that affects the kidneys and the other that affects the intestines. Protein is lost from these organs and there is no cure for either condition.
Grooming: As the Wheaten has a single coat rather than a double, it is easy to groom. This dog will need to brushed and combed two or three times a week only. The Wheaten does not shed much and is considered hypoallergenic. The teeth of the Wheaten should be brushed several times a week, and it is a good idea to get the dog used to this while it is still a puppy.
Living Conditions: As the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier bonds strongly with its human family, it is best when kept in the house where it can participate in family activities. This dog can live in an apartment as it has a calm disposition, but if it does, it must be given a good walk every day. They will work off some of their energy with play inside. During hot weather, it might be a good idea to skip the walk, as the Wheaten does not do well in the heat.

Always remember to teach children the boundaries with dogs. For instance, don’t bother them while their eating, don’t startle them while they sleep, don’t try to take food or a chew bone away from a dog and NEVER hit or beat a dog.
If anyone in the family has allergies, a good breed for sufferers is the Poodle. These dogs do not shed, are hypoallergenic and they are bred in three sizes, small, medium and large. A breed to fit any home.
Mixed breed dogs are always a good choice for many reasons. The most important is you will be saving a life. Visit shelters and contact rescue organizations to find your best family dog.
Millions of unwanted shelter dogs are put to sleep every year. Many are given up because of family illness or death, people not able to afford to feed them, moving and can’t take the family pet, etc. These dogs need a second chance to be loved and have a good home.
